Choose your trip
A round trip covers both crossings: out from your Panama City hotel at dawn on the day you pick, and back from San Blas on the return date — most people go out one morning and come back on another, and a same-day return works too if you are only going for the day.
The return boat leaves the islands in the morning and the 4x4 is back in Panama City between midday and 14:00, which is why we never recommend booking an international flight for that same afternoon. Everything else works like the one-way: soft bag up to 13 kg, $22 entry tax in cash, free date changes until 18:00 the day before departure.
Hotel pickup at 05:00–05:30, the mountain road, then the boat to your island.

Morning boat to Cartí and the 4x4 back to your hotel, arriving midday–14:00.

San Blas runs on its own rules — an early start, soft luggage, cash at the comarca gate, and a sea that sets the timetable. Five things worth knowing before you choose a date.

Everything travellers ask us before booking the Panama City–San Blas transfer — the 5 AM pickup, the 13 kg bag, the Guna Yala tax, port closures and the return timing.
Between 05:00 and 05:30, at your hotel in Panama City. The exact window is confirmed with the operator the evening before, and you should be waiting in reception from 05:00 — the 4x4 collects several groups and starts the mountain road before the traffic. This early start is what gets you onto the islands before mid-morning.
About four hours door to island: 2.5 to 3 hours on the winding mountain road to Cartí, then 30–45 minutes by boat to your island. The road is the demanding part — if you get carsick, sit towards the front and take a tablet before leaving.
It is the entry tax of the Guna Yala comarca — the autonomous Guna territory the islands belong to. Every visitor pays it once, in cash, in US dollars, on arrival at the comarca checkpoint. It is collected by the comarca authorities, not by us, and it is not included in the transfer price.
One soft bag up to 13 kg per traveller. Hard suitcases cannot board the lanchas — that is the operators’ rule, not ours — so a backpack or a soft duffel is the right choice, exactly like anywhere you travel by small boat. Extra or oversized bags: tell us when booking and we confirm the space with the operator.
The boats leave the islands in the morning and the 4x4 is back in the city between midday and 14:00 — sometimes a little later when the road is busy. Do not book an international flight for the same afternoon; the next morning is always comfortable.
More than 48 hours before departure: cancel or change freely, and it is refunded in full. Within 48 hours: we keep 10% and refund the rest. Under 12 hours or a no-show: nothing is refunded. And if the port authorities close Cartí — the one thing that stops the crossing — you choose between a free change of date and a full refund. To cancel, reply to your confirmation email.
The transfer is what we sell online, but we work with the island families directly: cabins with meals included, the Cayos Holandeses excursion and the visit to a traditional Guna community can all be arranged through us. Write to us with your dates and we answer with options and prices — payment for these is usually in cash on the islands.
At the Cartí dock the 4x4 hands you to a lancha that takes you to the island, sailboat or lodge you are staying at. That is why we ask, in the booking message, where you are heading: with the island name, the operator matches you to the right boat. On the way back, the boat collects you at your island in the morning.
Usually it is a 30–45 minute hop between islands, often flat and always beautiful. With wind and swell it can bounce, and the Guna skippers are experienced — but if you are sensitive, choose a seat towards the back, keep your eyes on the horizon, and tell us when booking so we mention it to the operator.

Getting there
Two roads and a boat: the shared 4x4, the private option, the small planes — and what the day actually looks like door to island.

Guna Yala
An autonomous territory, a $22 entry tax, mola textiles and a few rules that visitors should know — San Blas is not a resort.
