The best time to visit San Blas
· 5 min read

San Blas sits on the Caribbean side of Panama, where “winter” means the rainy season and the sea decides more than the calendar. Two seasons, two different trips — and a few weeks a year when half of Panama City has the same idea as you.
Dry season — December to April
The classic postcard season: the trade winds blow, the sky is mostly clear and the sea is at its calmest and clearest — the best conditions for the boat crossing and for snorkelling. December and January trade a little more wind for perfect light. This is also the season when the islands fill up, especially over the Christmas–New Year fortnight.
Rainy season — May to November
Greener, quieter and cheaper. Rain usually arrives in short, heavy bursts — mornings are often clear and the showers pass — but the sea picks up: with wind and swell, boats can take a detour or a crossing gets bumpy. The islands still sparkle between showers, and the mola markets are calm.
The weeks to book early
- Christmas and New Year — the single busiest fortnight of the year.
- Panama’s long weekends and carnival — shuttles fill several days ahead.
- March–April spring break, when flights and boats fill at the same time.
The transfer runs every day, both seasons — rain never cancels the crossing. Only a port closure by the authorities does, and then you choose between a free date change and a full refund.
Frequently asked questions
- Does it rain all day in the rainy season?
- No. The Caribbean does showers, not drizzle: heavy for half an hour, then sun again. The bigger variable is the sea — a few days of wind can make the crossing uncomfortable, and the skipper will say so.
- When is the sea calmest for the boat crossing?
- The dry season, roughly December to April, gives the most reliable calm — and the mornings are usually flatter than the afternoons in any season.
