San Blas day trip or overnight stay? How to choose
· 6 min read

From Panama City, San Blas looks close on a map. In practice it is about four hours door to island — a mountain road, a checkpoint and a boat — and the same again to come back. That journey, and the fact that the return boats leave the islands in the morning, decide almost everything about how long you should stay.
How the timings shape the day
| Step | When |
|---|---|
| Hotel pickup in Panama City | 05:00–05:30 |
| Mountain road to Cartí, $22 tax at the comarca checkpoint | About 2.5–3 hours |
| Lancha to your island | 30–45 minutes — on the water before mid-morning |
| Return boat from your island | In the morning |
| Back at your hotel in Panama City | Between midday and 14:00 |
The same-day round trip: what it really gives you
A same-day return is possible on our round trip — you simply pick the same date for both legs. But read the table again: you reach the islands around mid-morning, and the return boats run in the morning. A same-day round trip is therefore mostly road and water, with a short time among the islands rather than a beach day. It suits travellers who want to see the archipelago once and have no night to spare. If that is your plan, write to us before booking and we confirm with the operator how much island time your date allows.
One night: the afternoon, the sunset and the morning
Stay one night and the same four hours of travel buy you a whole afternoon in the water, the light going down over the islands, a quiet evening and a swim before the morning boat. It is the smallest stay where the trip feels like more than the journey. You still pay the $22 Guna Yala tax only once, on the way in, and the round trip is priced the same whatever the return date.
Two or three nights
With two nights you get one full day with no transport at all — the day for an excursion such as Cayos Holandeses or a visit to a Guna community, or for doing nothing in a hammock. Three nights let you slow down to the islands’ pace. Beyond that it is a matter of taste: life on a small island is simple, and some travellers love that more than others.
Booking it the right way
- Out and back with us: the round trip is $149 per person, against $158 for two one-ways — choose your return date when you book.
- Fix the return date before you leave the city. Changes and cancellations follow our terms, so do not plan on extending your stay once you are on the island.
- Tell us in the booking message which island or lodge you are staying at, so the operator puts you on the right boat both ways.
- Never book an international flight for the afternoon of your return day.
Need somewhere to sleep on the islands? What we sell online is the transfer. For a place to stay, write to us with your dates and we will tell you what we can suggest.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I go to San Blas and come back on the same day?
- Yes — book the round trip with the same date for both legs. Expect a long day that is mostly travel: about four hours each way, with a short time on the islands because the return boats run in the morning. Write to us first if island time matters to you.
- Is one night in San Blas enough?
- One night gives you an afternoon, a sunset and a morning swim — enough to understand the place. Two nights add a full day without transport, which is when excursions fit best.
- Do I pay the $22 tax again if I stay several nights?
- No. The Guna Yala entry tax is paid once per visit, in cash, at the comarca checkpoint on the way in — however many nights you stay.
- Does the round trip cost more if I come back later?
- No. The round trip is $149 per person whatever the return date, as long as it is not before the outbound date.
