Getting there
How to get to San Blas from Panama City
· 7 min read

The San Blas islands are 120 road kilometres and one sea crossing from Panama City — and they belong to Guna Yala, an autonomous Guna territory with its own rules and its own entry post. There is no road to the islands: you drive to Cartí and then the boats take over. Here is what each option really involves.
The shared 4x4 + boat — what we run
A 4x4 collects you at your hotel between 05:00 and 05:30 and takes the winding mountain road to Cartí in about 2.5 to 3 hours. At the dock, a lancha covers the last 30–45 minutes to your island. You pick the date and the direction when you book, pay online, and we confirm the pickup window with the operator the evening before.
- Best for: most travellers. One booking covers the whole chain, hotel to island.
- Cost: $79 one way, $149 round trip, per person, plus the $22 Guna Yala tax paid in cash on arrival.
- Watch out for: the 5 AM start. The 4x4 does not wait — it has several hotels to collect.
A private 4x4
The same road with the vehicle to yourselves, at your own hour and with door-to-door drops. It makes sense for families with children, photographers who want to stop on the way, and groups of four to six. The operators quote it by group size — write to us with your dates and we pass the price straight through.
The small planes
Small twin-prop planes leave from Albrook airport for a handful of airstrips inside Guna Yala, and the flight over the archipelago is spectacular. It is also the most weather-exposed option: planes are light, seats are few and luggage is tightly capped. If a flight is your plan, book it well ahead and keep a day of margin on each side.
Coming back
The boats leave the islands in the morning and the 4x4 drops you at your Panama City hotel between midday and 14:00. That is why no international flight should be booked for the same afternoon: a road closed by an accident or a slow sea can push the return past your check-in.
Our transfer leaves Panama City every day at 05:00–05:30 and brings you back to the city between midday and 14:00. Seats are booked online and confirmed immediately — the $22 Guna Yala tax stays payable in cash on arrival.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I do San Blas as a day trip from Panama City?
- Yes, with an early alarm: out at 5 AM, on an island before mid-morning, and back in the city between midday and 14:00. It is a long day — most of it on the road and the water — but the turquoise is worth the round trip.
- Where exactly do I meet the driver?
- At your hotel. Give the name and address when you book, wait in reception from 05:00, and keep your phone reachable — the driver calls if the road or the traffic changes the order of pickups.
