Panama City before and after San Blas: hotels, flights and a 5 AM pickup

· 6 min read

Every San Blas trip by road starts and ends in Panama City. The transfer collects you at your hotel before dawn and brings you back to a hotel in the early afternoon, so the nights on either side are part of the plan — and so are your flights. Here is how to set them up so that nothing gets tight.

Arrive the day before — at the latest

The 4x4 picks up at hotels between 05:00 and 05:30, so there is no way to land at Tocumen International Airport and join it the same morning. Sleep at least one night in the city first. If your flight lands late in the evening, it still works, but the night will be short — and a long flight followed by 2.5 to 3 hours of mountain curves is a hard combination. Two nights in the city before San Blas is the comfortable version.

Where to base yourself

Since the pickup is at your hotel, the best base is simply a hotel in the city with a staffed reception at 5 AM. Casco Viejo, the old town on the water, is the most atmospheric choice; the modern central neighbourhoods such as Bella Vista, El Cangrejo or Marbella are practical, with plenty of hotels and restaurants. If you are staying outside the city centre — near the airport, at a beach, or in a private rental without a reception — write to us before booking so we confirm the pickup with the operator.

The night before: a short checklist

  • Pack one soft bag of up to 13 kg — it is all that boards the boat.
  • Put $22 per person in cash, in small US dollar notes, somewhere easy to reach for the comarca checkpoint.
  • Ask reception about an early breakfast or a packed one, and tell them you leave at 5 AM.
  • Keep your phone charged and reachable — the pickup window is confirmed the evening before, and the driver calls if the order of pickups changes.
  • If you get carsick, take a tablet before leaving, not on the road.

The suitcase that stays behind

Hard suitcases cannot board the lanchas, whatever their weight. The simplest plan is to book the same hotel for the night before and the night after San Blas, and ask whether they can keep your case while you are on the islands — you leave it at 5 AM and find it again when the 4x4 drops you off. Check this with the hotel when you book the room, not on the morning of departure.

Coming back: timing your flight

The boats leave the islands in the morning and the 4x4 is back at your hotel between midday and 14:00 — sometimes later when the road is busy or the sea is slow. That window decides your flight.

International flightOur advice
Same afternoonNo. Do not book it.
Same eveningNot recommended: the return window is not a fixed time, and a delay on the road leaves you no margin.
Next morning or laterThe comfortable choice — one more night in the city.

When you book, give the name and address of your Panama City hotel for the pickup. The booking is confirmed straight away, and the exact pickup window the evening before departure.

Frequently asked questions

Can you pick me up at Tocumen airport for San Blas?
The transfer picks up at hotels in Panama City between 05:00 and 05:30, so it does not connect with a flight landing the same morning. Spend the night in the city and we collect you there; if you are staying near the airport, write to us before booking.
Can I catch an evening flight on the day I come back from San Blas?
We do not recommend it. You are back between midday and 14:00, sometimes later, and an international flight needs a real margin. Book the next morning or later.
What do I do with my hard suitcase?
It cannot board the boats, so it stays in Panama City. Ask your hotel, when you book the room, whether it can store it while you are on the islands — booking the same hotel before and after San Blas makes this simple.
